For more than a decade, Alki Software published Proofing Tools that allowed users of Microsoft Office to check spellings, synonyms and grammar, and hyphenate, in various languages. These products, which were manufactured by Alki using some components licensed from Microsoft, were sold directly by Alki in the United States and Canada, and by Microsoft elsewhere in the world.
Alki stopped selling Proofing Tools in 2002 because customers were adopting Microsoft Office 2000, which had spell checkers and other proofing tools for multiple languages built in.
In addition, users of Office 2000 could purchase a CD containing more than 30 languages, any of which could be installed by users.
For Office XP and Office 2003, Microsoft expanded the number of languages and the depth of features available. Languages supported include Arabic, Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Gaelic (Ireland), Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Marathi, Norwegian (Bokmål), Norwegian (Nynorsk), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian (Latin), Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Welsh.
Alki no longer supports its legacy products, which were last updated for Office 97 but which also work for Office 2000.
Today, any Office user who desires multilingual support should be using a modern version of Office because of the superiority of the features, and the availability of product support directly from Microsoft.
We encourage Office users to purchase from Microsoft the appropriate Proofing Tools product for Office 2003.
